Bichon Frises are very intelligent dogs. For instance Belle was the only dog I’ve ever seen that learned by watching, as opposed to being taught everything. Our Border Collie had terrible hay fever. So he sneezed a lot. He sneezed on several occasions while I was giving him and Belle a treat. Soon after, whenever Belle wanted a treat she would walk up to me and sneeze.
This kind of intelligence can be very positive, but it has its drawbacks as well.
An intelligent dog can be easier to train, but it can also make the dog very “headstrong”
Bichons can be manipulative and stubborn so you need to start your Bichon Frise training immediately.

From Belle’s third litter we kept Annie. Belle was so easily trained I was caught a little off guard by Annie. Annie was a more typical Bichon. Many bichons can be difficult, and that was Annie. She was timid, and stubborn which made her tough to train.
Annie would;
· Bark at every little noise she heard,
· Go crazy whenever somebody came to door and jump all over them. I know she thought she was just being friendly, but it was very annoying!
· Chew on my fingers
· Chew on the furniture.
· And (yuck!) she was eating poop!
But, by using some of the tricks, and techniques I’d learned from my mother, and from having raised three litters of pups I was able to avoid the problems many Bichon Frise owners have and break Annie of all of her bad habits.
